Good communication is essential to any healthy relationship, whether it's between spouses, family members, friends, or co-workers. Mindfulness—the practice of nonjudgemental awareness—can help us communicate more effectively and meaningfully with others in our personal and professional lives.
Open to all levels of participants, this weekend workshop introduces a simple but profound method for practicing Mindful Communication: being aware of how we open (symbolized by a green light) and close (red light), and what happens 'in-between' (yellow light). These core themes from senior teacher Susan Gillis Chapman's acclaimed book The Five Keys to Mindful Communication give us a starting point for understanding how to protect our relationships (creating 'green zones') by shifting our approach from 'me-first' to 'we-first'. In that context, we gain greater access to five elements of our natural commuication system — silence, mirroring, encouraging, discerning, and responding. With mindfulness, we're able to listen more deeply to others and to develop greater clarity and confidence about how to respond. This interactive workshop format includes mindfulness meditation instruction and practice, brief talks, dialogue groups, and experiential exercises.
In addition to her writing, Ms. Gillis-Chapman is an authorized senior teacher (Acharya) in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and a licensed (retired) family theripist in Vancouver, BC. She is a deeply experienced meditation practitioner and teacher who spent nine years completing and directing the traditional "3-year meditation retreat" at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia under the mentorship of Pema Chödrön.
